Efforts are being made to design new drugs which could inhibit a disruptive enzyme responsible (in part) for a range of diseases including cancers, epilepsy, and Alzheimer's.


More information on the new key lines of enquiry (KLOE's) that inspectors will be following in rating care providers.

It should be clearer to providers, more exactly what is expected of them; and what steps (eg. staff re-training) they need to take to ensure a higher rating.

The Commission has announced changes to the way it will regulate care providers across the board. New 'provider handbooks' have been published to help with compliance.

One of the major changes is the use of multiple sources of evidence in judging the quality and safety of care provided.

The Alzheimer’s Society hopes increasing evidence of the numbers of people with early onset dementia – some in their 30s and 40s – will lead to better diagnosis.

Following media reports that Labour is expected to announce an increase in NHS spending by £1 billion pounds a year, Chief Executive Jeremy Hughes is calling for an increase in dementia care funding, saying, "A better funded NHS must support people with all diseases"

A look at the World Alzheimer's Report 2014. The report finds that dementia in later life can be reduced if diabetes and high blood pressure can be controlled. Other factors that can further diminish risk are:

- smoking cessation
- better educational opportunities
- maintaining brain health in mid life.
