The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) has upheld its recommendation not to routinely screen people aged 65 and over for dementia. Despite the fact that more than half of the estimated 850,000 people with dementia in the UK currently have a diagnosis, the society concurs with this view, due to

- a lack of accurate tests for the condition
- the non-availability of effective treatments

However, they do strongly advise that GPs routinely ask those at a higher risk of dementia about their memory.
